Here's an interesting article about cooking, food and making green choices in the home. Kate Heyhoe is the cookbook authors who suggests a number of ways to reduce your 'cookprint' aka your ecological cooking footprint!

Food and the dreaded recession...

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

So I noticed this article today when browsing the CBC for a little morning news with my coffee:
http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2009/03/26/f-bestbefore.html

Immediately it grossed me out--something about eating mayonnaise up to three months after the expiration date seems incredibly sketchy (mayonnaise already freaks me out a bit to be honest). But then I started thinking that the reporter has a really good point. The recession will definitely have an impact on the types of food choices that Canadians are making. With more unemployment, lighter pockets, and general slow down in the market, its interesting to consider how food choices may change. People may opt for cheaper, less healthy options during this time. I also wonder what time of long term impact this may have on health, chronic disease and such... I'm not very familiar with the impact of the 1930s recession, but I might look into literature which tracked nutritional change and long term disease impact at this time.

Interesting to ask yourself if your food habits will change consciously as a result of this recession...but I recommend staying away from the old mayo (yuck).

Food choices and indulgences

This is a response to the Heart Attack Grill discussion that had initiated on our Youth Leaders 4 Health Facebook group--and I thought I'd bring it to TiG too!

Here's the original link to the Heart Attack Grill

Monika, I think you're right-- an indulgence always has to be 'bad' for you!

But sometimes it can be--and I am wondering how the whole healthy-eating/foods movement might impact people's feelings around such indulgences and if talking about moderation is import... enjoying things that can be 'bad' in moderation? Maybe what I'm really on about here is harm reduction as it relates to food (haha one track mind)?

Healthy Food Supplement

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Have you already seen the Healthy Food Supplement campaign by Toronto Public Health?

http://www.toronto.ca/health/foodsupplement/index.htm

The campaign suggests that those who are on social assistance need access to the $100 monthly supplement to address issues of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
While I think this sounds like a great idea, I think that there is likely a need for some sort of education/health communication component that goes along with it. Last year in BC we received some sort of 'greening supplement' that was intended to be used on buying environmentally friendly products for your home/life. There was a massive campaign about all the types of improvements you could make (switching to low energy light bulbs/getting your bike tuned up, etc). I wonder what a campaign to advocate for making healthy food choices would look like?

(oops Monica, I see now that you added something about this already!)

Another 4H story

So I found this last week but had forgotten to post this until now. It's not necessarily related to food, but again, this video gives a little bit of insight into what 4H programs attempt to foster in their youth programs. It's a pretty cool video, plus has allowed me to see what kind of environmental/ecological issues face more rural communities!
